Auctionata: Real-Time Online Auctions in HD

All the Services of a Classic Art and Auction House Exclusively over the Internet

Auctionata brings all the thrill of the auction room to life for everyone online, for the first time. The Berlin-based start-up has developed the Internet equivalent of a traditional auction room. So bidders now have the opportunity to submit their bids live and directly to the online auction room from their computer, tablet or mobile device, from anywhere in the world – as if they were actually sitting in the auction room. They can acquire objects from a variety of specialty areas ranging from art, antiques and collectibles to wines, watches and jewelry.

Where Art Meets Technology

Coming from a family of art dealers, Alexander Zacke, co-founder and CEO of Auctionata, had the vision of bringing an art and auction house, with all its functions, to the online world. Alexander was able to turn his vision into reality when he met Georg Untersalmberger, a counterpart who was capable of implementing the complex business model using ingenious technology. After two years of programming, the two founders were able to launch Auctionata in February 2012.

After the launch of its Online Shop in September with objects sold at fixed prices, Auctionata held the first live art auction in the history of the Internet in December 2012, welcoming bidders from 31 countries.

CEO Alexander Zacke explains: “We don’t need an old-established brand, thick print catalogues, pretentious showrooms or extravagant events. We go directly into our customers’ living rooms. Never has it been so easy before to find and acquire rare and valuable objects, without having to forgo top-notch expertise and certainty. It’s e-commerce in its purest form”.

Just one year after being founded, Auctionata expanded its prestigious circle of investors to also include the venture capital firm Earlybird. This enabled the start-up to open its own TV studio in Berlin in May 2013 and to regularly hold thematic live auctions in HD quality on Fridays at 6 pm CET.

World’s online auctions pioneer

In Auctionata´s virtual auction room, art lovers and collectors find everything that makes up a real auction: a clear view of the auctioneer and the object being auctioned, real-time information on the bidding activities of the participants, and the opportunity to place bids themselves. Just as in real life – but without having to invest extra time and travel costs! Auctionata made all this possible by developing real-time live-stream auctions in HD, which are broadcast from its own TV studio.

Biggest Network of Experts Worldwide

Auctionata offers all the services of a classic art and auction house. These range from evaluation and appraisal to the marketing and sale of precious objects, along with all the associated logistics. This is enabled by more than 250 independent members of the largest worldwide network of experts for art, antiques and collectibles.

For a first estimate, a picture of the object in good quality must be submitted to Auctionata. The seller will then receive a non-binding valuation, free of charge, and can decide whether to sell the object through Auctionata. The company offers an exclusive 5-year guarantee of authenticity on all objects sold. With its full service, Auctionata reaches millions of private sellers, collectors and dealers who find it difficult to sell in regional and highly fragmented, old-style auction houses.

Successes and Further Developments

In its very first year holding auctions, Auctionata set a number of records. These include breaking the previously existing record for the online sale of a work of fine art with the auction of Egon Schiele’s “Reclining Woman” for €1.8 million ($2.4 million, incl. buyer´s premium) on June 21 of last year. Since its creation, the start-up has been growing constantly, with its sales volume increasing from €1.2 million ($1.65 million) in 2012 to €12 million ($16.5 million) in 2013.

Today, Auctionata has 160 employees and offices in Berlin, New York, London and Zurich, and it plans to pursue its international expansion by adding office in Hong Kong and a full-service location in New York, the center of the international art trade.

First off I would like to say awesome blog!
I had a quick question that I'd like to ask if you do not mind.
I was interested to find out how you center yourself and clear your mind before
writing. I've had difficulty clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out.
I truly do take pleasure in writing but it just seems like the first 10
to 15 minutes tend to be wasted simply just trying to figure
out how to begin. Any suggestions or tips? Thank you!
